Screen icon Zsa Zsa Gabor is in the fight of her life after slipping into a coma following emergency stomach surgery this week.
The frail 94 year old was discharged from Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center on Monday after receiving treatment for severe pneumonia-related symptoms, but was back in a doctors’ care 24 hours later to treat a “major infection in her stomach,” which was caused by a feeding tube. She lost consciousness this morning and has been unresponsive since.
“She’s been in a coma since last night,” says John Blanchette, the Hungarian-born actress’ longtime spokesman. “She had to have emergency surgery after she started bleeding in her stomach due to a feeding tube.”
Gabor has been hospitalized multiple times since she broke her hip after a fall in her Bel Air home last July. Her leg was partially amputated in January after she developed gangrene. In February, she was treated for pneumonia. Less than a month later, concerns for her health mounted when she suffered a breakdown after learning of the death of fellow silver screen dame, Elizabeth Taylor, and began coughing up blood.
The platinum-blonde actress is as known for her flamboyant lifestyle, legal troubles, and multiple marriages as she is for her work in Hollywood. One-third and the last surviving of the glamorous Gabor Sisters, Zsa Zsa Hollywood career has included spots in a dozen films and TV series, such as John Huston’s 1952 classic Moulin Rouge. She’s also lent her voice to several animated films and TV series.
